Packaging company moves to mono-material pumps and bottles to improve recyclability

One of my regular ID jobs is “structural packaging design” i.e. bottles. I have worked with a variety of materials, and I think a layman would be surprised to know how many different materials are contained in an average dispenser bottle. They are usually mostly polypropylene, but also contain other herbs and spices:
The combination of materials ensures that the pump will do its job well as the different plastics work together to minimize friction, not react badly with the product, absorb pigments, etc. The problem comes when they need to be recycled. Although all materials are individually recyclable, they are too small for the average municipal waste center to separate them cost-effectively, so a regular dispenser bottle ends up in the bin.
Fortunately, some companies are working on solutions. Beauty brand Inn Beauty Project says it’s the first to launch a single-material, recyclable disposable pump.
However, they don’t mention what material it is, or if the bottle itself is made from the same material, do consumers need to separate the pump from the bottle before recycling? Need better messaging.

Global packaging manufacturer AptarGroup also joined the party by announcing their new pump bottle, Future, which reportedly took two years to develop and develop. Made entirely of polyethylene, including pump, all components and bottle, and is recyclable for single use. “Because the Future pump is made entirely of polyethylene, it is also suitable for use with the most common bottle materials, polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate,” the company said in a statement. Easier to recycle.”
Sabine Buje-Lubo, Director of Global Strategic Marketing at Aptar Beauty + Home, said: “Our ultimate goal is to enable the end consumer to pick up their body lotion, shampoo or shower gel and easily toss the empty packaging into the trash can.” Thus, it enters a circular life cycle and can be turned into another product.”

Brazilian manufacturer Wista Airless Systems is even more candid about its mono-material pump vials: “The complete assembly of the Airless SAGE [and] UD pump system is made of polyethylene. So once the [product content] is ready, the packaging does not require separate parts. Ready for recycling.\”
